Quito has a spit personality, there is an Old City and a New City. These are very different from each other. The Old City is the old Colonial centre that the spaniards took from the indigenous peoples and renamed San Fransisco de Quito because Fransican monks were the first on the conversion scene here. The Quito bit is old quechua for Middle of the Earth.

The buildings are closely packed together in a grid system of blocks or cuadras.
The New City is a mixture of large open park spaces and high rises.

Both halves are nestled between two ranges of hills around which are 5 volcanoes, most of them defined as active!!
The old city has some great buildings most of which are churches with stunning interiors.
